It's important to note that populating the drugs table is not required for PTS's core functionality. In addition it's recommended that the drug data be imported using an automated tool of some sort such as our own free DM+D importer software, or via a data dump from your dispensing software. While you can add drugs to this page manually it's plainly not appropriate for the many thousands of different drugs you'll be handling.
Unlike other setup pages, miscellaneous barcodes are not something you can edit or add to.

The Miscellaneous Barcodes setup page is a repository of barcodes that serve specific system functions.

Unlike other setup pages, miscellaneous barcodes are not something you can edit or add to.

The most popular barcodes that are printed from here include:

  • Collected - to record collection of a prescription or bag with a barcode scanner.
  • To-Follow - various ways to automatically create to-follow prescriptions.
  • Shortcuts - shortcut barcodes to open the booking in screen, or the prescription details screen of a specific prescription.

Accessing the setup page

The PTS sidebar with Setup selected.

Like many of the different PTS utilities, setup is found in the left-hand side bar.

Hover over the sidebar with the mouse cursor and the side bar will expand. Select Setup to reveal a drop-down list of the various setup pages you have permission to access.

To choose a setup page click on its name in the list to be taken to the setup page.

PTS 5 is the most user configurable version of our Prescription Tracking System to date. As a result parts of this Wiki assumes that the reader has permission to access the elements of the system in question. If you don't see specific items and utilities where they are supposed to be you may not have permission to access them.

Available barcodes

  1. FOL$x - Create to-follow prescription
For each prescription type there will be a corresponding to-follow barcode available here. These barcodes can be scanned to automatically create a new prescription for items that will not be completed as part of the original prescription. You will follow this barcode with a "number of items" scan, as below. It's a popular idea to create a specific "to-follow" prescription type for this purpose.
  2. NOI$x - x items to-follow
Subsequent to scanning a "create to-follow" code, you will scan the number of items that will be moved to the new to-follow prescription. This also reduces the number of items on the original prescription by the corresponding amount.
  3. NOI$x - Dispensed x items
Unrelated to "to-follows". You can scan these barcodes to amend the "number of items dispensed" field of a prescription.
  4. STA$5 - Collected
Record collection of a prescription or bag.
  5. STA$7 - Delivered
Record delivery of a prescription or bag. This barcode is rarely actually suitable; barcode scanners are not usually available at the point of delivery.
  6. TXT$x - Barcodes representing alphanumeric characters
Some notes can allow or require the entry of free format text. These barcodes allow you to use a scanner to enter the free text with codes that represent the numbers 0 – 9 and letters from A to Z. Except for some specific edge cases it's no secret that it will be faster and more user friendly to do this on-screen instead of using barcodes.
  7. BLE$1 - Yes
Scan the Yes barcode to confirm and commit the free text entry after using the alphanumeric codes above. The scanner will return to normal use.
  8. BLE$0 - No
The No barcode is used to discard alphanumeric code entry and return the scanner to normal use.
  9. WEB$BOOKIN
Scanning User > WEB$BOOKIN will open PTS and display the booking-in screen.
  10. WEB$VIEW
Scanning User > Prescription > WEB$VIEW will open PTS and display the details of the prescription.

Printing miscellaneous barcodes

To begin, select the barcodes by ticking the tick box to the left of their entries in the list. You can select multiple barcodes at once. Once you've done so the Actions Menu will slide in from the right-hand side of the webpage.

Click on the Print Barcodes button and the available printers will be listed, along with the option to print a QR code for use exclusively with 2D barcode readers.

Click on the printer you want to use and the barcode label will be printed. If you chose Browser Printing then your web browser will handle the print job as opposed to PTS and a print preview will be displayed along with the option to choose an attached printer.
